Chicago Integrative Psychotherapy
At Chicago Integrative Psychotherapy, LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy means creating an open, validating, and supportive space for individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and expressions. To us, being affirming isn’t just about being accepting, it’s about actively celebrating and honoring our clients’ identities. LGBTQ+ individuals are not just welcome here – this space was intentionally created to include and uplift you.
Affirming therapy is rooted in deep respect for lived experience, acknowledgment of systemic oppression, and a commitment to providing care that supports personal empowerment, self-expression, and healing. We also understand that being LGBTQ+ is not inherently a source of distress, it’s often the surrounding culture, discrimination, and internalized messages that create suffering.
Mental health care has historically not always been safe or inclusive for LGBTQ+ individuals. Many people have had experiences where their identity was pathologized, misunderstood, or minimized sometimes even within therapy.
Being LGBTQ+ affirming is essential because it acknowledges the unique experiences, strengths, and challenges of this community. It’s a way of saying: “You don’t have to educate us or defend who you are here. This space was built with you in mind.” It’s also about disrupting systems of harm and helping our clients reconnect with their inner worth, resilience, and authenticity.
Some of the common experiences individuals in the LGBTQ+ community might face include:
We also see the toll these experiences can take on a person’s sense of safety, connection, and well-being.
Affirming therapy offers a space to process, heal, and grow without fear of judgment or invalidation. It supports clients in:
Affirming therapy is ultimately about restoration of agency, of self-love, of joy.
While every person’s experience is unique, some themes we often support clients with include:
We’re also mindful of the intersections between LGBTQ+ identities and other aspects of experience — such as race, disability, class, religion, and immigration status — and how these intersections shape a person’s mental health journey. We believe in the healing power of connection and in our clients’ inherent wholeness, wisdom, and strength.
Our team includes clinicians who are part of the LGBTQ+ community and/or have extensive experience working with LGBTQ+ clients. We offer:
We also continually assess our own biases and privilege, knowing that being affirming is an ongoing practice — not a fixed identity. Additionally, seeking affirming therapy does mean our sessions need to revolve around your LGBTQ+ identity, but when it does, we are ready to meet those needs.
